Walter Kuhlman (1918-2009) was prominent in the San Francisco Bay Area art community for more than six decades. In the late 1940s and 1950s, he was a core member of the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism, along with such friends as Richard Diebenkorn, Frank Lobdell, and James Budd Dixon. The artist then focused on a distinctive representational style related to American Figurative Expressionism. Kuhlman taught at several institutions, including the University of New Mexico and Sonoma State. His many honors included a fellowship from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts (1957), a grant as Outstanding Artist and Teacher from the California Arts Council (1982), and election to the National Academy of Design (1995). His papers are included in the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art. Kuhlman’s art can be found in the major museums of Northern California, as well as in the British Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art, to name a few.

In 1955, Walter Kuhlman opened a studio in Sausalito’s historic Industrial Center Building. He continued to work there for more than 50 years. Today, the Studio remains a center for Kuhlman’s artistic legacy, displaying artworks and hosting events. In accordance with Kuhlman’s wishes, his artworks are available for purchase. Beginning in February 2011, David Findlay Jr. Gallery (New York, NY) holds primary responsibility for the estate. Selected artworks remain at the ICB Studio, and collectors are welcome to visit or inquire.
